Q  I'm a First Responder (FR)/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), how do I join?

Download the EMS Team Application from the Volunteer Information page and do one of the following:

Q  I'm not a certified First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician but would like to volunteer?
A 

Unfortunately, we are only accepting applications from currently certified First Responder's (FR's) and Emergency Medical Technician's (EMT's) or those whose certification status is pending due to EMSRB regulations.

Q  Is there an interview process?
A 

Yes. We will first review your application and if acceptable we will send you information about our interview process. Interviews typically take about 30 minutes. Once you have successfully completed an interview, we will send you a formal acceptance or rejection letter.

Q  What is orientation and how often do you do them?
A 

All newly accepted volunteers are required to attend a one-day orientation before they can begin volunteering at events. Orientation is held about two times a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) and is usually held on a Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Q  How can I get more information about becoming certified as a First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician?
A 

We offer First Responder and Emergency Medical Technician courses. Contact us via e-mail at (umems@umn.edu) and more information will be sent to you. Other teaching institutions include the U of M Emergency Health Services (courses online through OneStop), HCMC, Inver Hills College, Century College, and others. Q  What benefits do volunteers get?
A 

On top of meeting new people and getting an opportunity to make a difference through direct patient care, UMEMS provides: Emergency Medical Technician initial class reimbursement (up to $450) after one-year of active volunteering, FREE training including First Responder and Emergency Medical Technician refreshers, meal vouchers for most sporting events, limited parking reimbursement, and other benefits such as a yearly team banquet.

Q  Are all of the members volunteer?
A 

Most of our members are volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians. Other positions include: volunteer First Responder, paid Field Training Officer, paid Supervisor, and paid management positions, all of which require at least one year of prior volunteering.

Q  How much do your courses cost?
A 

Our courses are free for active volunteers. For non-active volunteers, the cost of our courses is competitive with other local institutions. Please look at the course application on the Emergency Medical Education page.

Q  How much time do you require for volunteers?
A 

The current UMEMS accountability policy requires three events per month (typically lasting four hours) as well as attending monthly meetings held the second Sunday of every month.
