UMEMS Common Questions & Answers

Joining UMEMS
Q:
I'm a First Responder (FR)/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), how do I join?
A: Download the application from the Files page and either email, mail, or fax it to us.

Q: I'm not a certified FR/EMT but would like to volunteer.
A: Unfortunately, we are only accepting applications from currently certified FRs/EMTs or those whose certification status is pending due to EMSRB regulations. Please check out our Flyer from the Files page.

Q: Is there an interview process?
A: Yes. We will first review your application and if acceptable we will send you information about our interview process. Interviews typically take about 30 minutes. Once you have successfully completed an interview, we will send you a formal acceptance or rejection letter.

Q: What is orientation and how often do you do them?
A: All newly accepted volunteers are required to attend a 1-day orientation before they can begin volunteering at events. Orientation is held about 2 times a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, and usually runs 0900-1700 on a Sunday.

Courses
Q: I would like more information about becoming certified as a FR or EMT.

A: We offer FR and EMT courses and can be contacted regarding this by email. Other teaching institutions include the U of MN Emergency Health Services (courses online through OneStop), HCMC, Inver Hills College, Century College, and others. Visit this site for a listing of state-wide EMS courses.

UMEMS Members
Q: What benefits do volunteers get?
A: On top of meeting new people and getting an opportunity to make a difference through direct patient care, UMEMS provides: EMT Initial class reimbursement (up to $450) after 1-year of active volunteering, FREE training including FR/EMT refreshers, meal vouchers for most sporting events, limited parking reimbursement, and other benefits such as a yearly team banquet.

Q: Are all of the members volunteer?
A: Most of our members are volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians. Other positions include: volunteer First Responder, paid Field Training Officer, paid Supervisor, and paid Management positions but these require at least one year of prior volunteering.

Q: How much do your courses cost?
A: Free for active volunteers. For non-active volunteers, the cost of our courses is competitive with other local institutions. Please look at the Course Application from the Files page.

Q: How much time do you require for volunteers?
A: The current UMEMS Accountability policy requires 3 events per month as well as attending monthly meetings which are the 2nd Sunday of every month at 1900. Events typically last 4 hours.

Q: How can I find out more about what UMEMS does?
A: Email us or visit the first aid room at one of our events. Check out the Venues page for a list of our first aid room locations.
